The Philharmonic is pleased to present two winners of the most recent Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA) Composition Contest as the first step in the process of bringing our audiences young composers of merit.
"An Introspection" by Gabriel Hawes, 2012 High School Winner
"Magic" by Emily Kincaid, 2012 Middle School Winner
Gabriel Hawes is a junior at North Central High School in Indianapolis. He began studying composition with Dr. Frank Felice at Butler University in 2010. He has won two Indiana Music Education Association composition awards in the String Orchestra category and one award in the Concert Band category. During his writing process, he seeks answers to fundamental questions such as what is music and what is music's purpose. Aside from his composition, he is a proficient horn player and plays in the NCHS Wind Ensemble. Gabriel aspires to study composition at Oberlin Conservatory.
Emily Kincaid lives in Zionsville with her parents, younger brother and sister, cat, and dog. She is currently in 7th grade at Zionsville Middle School. Emily plays the viola in her class orchestra as well as the Strolling Strings. She is also active in the Drama and Art Clubs. Besides music and art, Emily loves to read, spend time with her friends, and watch "geeky" science shows with her dad.
